The increasing use of smart laminated composite structures in aerospace and high-performance engineering applications necessitates advanced numerical modeling strategies capable of accurately capturing their complex mechanical behavior. This study presents an innovative global-local modeling approach based on node-dependent kinematics (NDK) and the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF) to enhance the simulation of wave propagation, structural health monitoring (SHM), and damage detection in composite panels with embedded piezoelectric sensors.

By enabling kinematic refinement at the nodal level, this method ensures a detailed and precise description of stress fields, including transverse stresses—a crucial aspect often oversimplified in conventional models. The approach allows for the coexistence of high-fidelity layer-wise models in localized areas and efficient homogenized equivalent single-layer models elsewhere, optimizing computational cost while maintaining accuracy.

Additionally, this framework effectively addresses multi-field coupled problems by incorporating electromechanical interactions between piezoelectric transducers and the host structure. This capability is essential for accurate simulations of SHM systems, where mechanical waves interact with embedded sensing elements to detect structural anomalies. The proposed methodology offers a robust and efficient tool for the analysis of active composite structures, contributing to the advancement of next-generation structural monitoring techniques and multiphysics modeling strategies in critical engineering applications.

告人简介:

Enrico Zappino is an Associate Professor at the Politecnico di Torino, specializing in structural analysis and advanced modeling techniques. Since 2010, he has been part of Professor Carrera's research group and has coauthored numerous papers published in leading international journals. His research focuses on structural analysis, multi-field analysis, manufacturing process simulations, and 3D printing of materials for aerospace applications. He earned his PhD in Aerospace Engineering, where he developed innovative 1D, 2D, and 3D models for the analysis of aerospace structures.

He has actively participated in research projects with the European Space Agency and the European Union, collaborating with industrial and academic partners. A member of the Italian Association of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIDAA) for over 10 years, he has also held a teaching role since 2011 and is currently an Adjunct Professor at the Turin Polytechnic University in Tashkent. Additionally, he served as Executive Project Manager for the organization of International Astronautical Congress (IAC) 2024.
